Hong Kong Solos by Ari Benjamin Meyers, presented by Spring Workshop Hong Kong
Performance at Things that can happen

16 Mar- 1 Apr 2017
Things that can happen
1/F, 98 Apliu Street, Sham Shui Po, Kowloon, Hong Kong

A part of An exposition, not an exhibitionHong Kong Solos is an artwork by Ari Benjamin Meyers that will take place at six non-profit art organizations—Asia Art Archive, Hong Kong Arts Centre, M+, Para Site, soundpocket and Things that can happen. Meyers invited six local Hong Kong composers to create new works for staff members at these organizations across the city. In order to experience these intimate pieces devised for 1 performer and 1-4 audience members, potential listeners are invited to book visits to these institutions. The work centers around bringing together usually disparate parties: a composer and an art professional, a performer and a visitor, and the members of the art and music worlds of Hong Kong.

for Voice and Tape
Departing from the study of speech as music and rhythm, Lam Lai’s piece is scored for Chantal’s voice and portable tape recorder in a work that explores the machine’s biography and how music can capture shifts in space and time.

I’m There
for Video and sound installation

“A while ago, when I was in the midst of promoting one of my concerts, there was a question that came up in my mind: ‘When is the best time for the arts? Or when is the best time not for the arts?’ In this work ‘I’m there,’ I create an actual situation in which the art is surrounding us, in a place where we usually wouldn’t stay long or just pass by quickly. The most suitable few places to install this work would be by the waiting area of a washroom, the corridor, or the waiting island halfway across the road. The video is a 30-minute loop. Unexpectedly there will be a one-minute video clip showing a few times within the loop. This one-minute video clip is a modification of a moving street view from Hong Kong, which I captured from the inside of a car. The work is an attempt to record a very simple scenario in your memory, the moment that you notice the video is playing near you. If you are waiting to see the next one-minute of the video clip, congratulations, we are in the same group of people who are eager to see more arts in our life.”

audio-DH, The Hague

audio-DH, collaborative project
The Hague

“Conceived and directed by Francisco López audio-DH is a collaborative project of epic proportions that weaves the sounds of 250 of The Hague’s creative minds into an exploration of the city’s vibrant sonic tapestry.

With the help of fellow composer Barbara Ellison and the artist platform iii, 50 curators were invited to rally the city’s creative community, gathering contributions from composers, experimental musicians, sound artists, noise makers etc.. in the broadest and most inclusive definition of contemporary sonic creativity. The response was outstanding, resulting in a collection of 195 tracks by 250 artists.

This collection is made available both in the form of an online edition on and also as a physical edition, as a high capacity USB memory card, published by iii editions.

Furthermore, the contributions collected are used as material for new meta-compositions created by HARING (Humanless Audio Recombinator for Infinite Novelty Generation), a software designed by Francisco López together with Andrea Vogrig and Darien Brito.

Launched on September 22nd 2016 at Korzo theatre during TodaysArt festival with a concert performed by HARING, audio-DH will be presented further at various listening stations to be announced.

All the audio material collected and the software that was created for the project are released under Creative Commons licence and freely downloadable.

Re-recorded Spatial Dynamics

“A new series of Sonic Anchor, Second Coming Series, will be launched in the historic building Comix Home Base. In this series, we invite artists that we have featured in the previous Sonic Anchor to present works that response directly to this historical site.

To kickoff the Second Coming series, composer-sound artist Lam Lai will conduct an experiment in outdoor live looping, paying homage to Lucier’s tape-loop classic “I Am Sitting In A Room”. Since her last Sonic Anchor appearance, Lam Lai had spent time honing her craft in Netherlands – we can’t wait to see her transformation.”

Eating the Sound of the Vibraphone
for Vibraphone and Environmental sounds

Karen YU Vibraphone

To develop a new piece with a vibraphone and environment sounds and use different dimension of recording/playback methods as musical elements in the piece. The main focus is to set the live vibraphone sound into ambient sound.

The sounds of the vibraphone are recorded through 4 microphones at the same time. Microphones are placed in different location of the building (refer to the picture above) and pointing to different direction. This placement allows recording the vibraphone sound in different acoustic environments. So in the recording, you could hear the difference of sound distance and the sound environment among 4 different microphones. Two channels speakers use to playback the sound.
